The Municipality of Clarington is home to 85,000 people and includes Courtice, Bowmanville, Newcastle, Newtonville and Orono along with a host of small rural hamlets and villages.   Clarington encompasses 608 square kilometres which makes it the largest land area in Durham Region. The many small rural villages and hamlets in Clarington do not have municipal services, but instead rely on their own wells and septic systems.

You’ll find a large selection of heritage homes in many of the neighbourhoods as well as mid century homes. Real growth started in the 90’s with new home subdivisions popping up in Courtice, Bowmanville and Newcastle. Excellent builders offer a wide variety of styles and high-end finishes. You’ll find townhomes, semi-detached and detached as well as a great selection of Condo townhouse and low rise apartment buildings. Whatever size, type or style you choose, the new home builders are creating well-planned living areas to suit the needs of today’s buyers.

Most of the residential areas within within Clarington are a short drive to highway 401, giving quick access to highways 418/407 and other commuter routes. there is also easy access to highways 35/115 for those weekend getaways and country drives. Go transit is available in the communities near Highway 2 and there are currently 5 local bus routes provided by Durham Region Transit in Newcastle, Bowmanville and Courtice with some connecting to GO Transit.

The Town of Bowmanville, and the Village of Newcastle both have downtown heritage shopping districts that include a large collection of retail stores, antique shops, and restaurants.The Durham Region Highway 2 shopping corridor contains numerous shopping plazas, fast food restaurants, big box stores and retail chains.

Farm fresh produce is sold on a seasonal basis at many designated farms situated throughout the municipality.

The Waterfront Trail suitable for walking and cycling, begins near McLaughlin Bay in Darlington Provincial Park. In addition Clarington has numerous conservation areas that have trails suitable for hiking, and cross-country skiing. The Ganaraska Forest Centre is a popular spot for mountain biking, motorcycling, snowmobiling and horseback riding. The Municipality of Clarington also operates numerous community centres and swimming pools.

If you are a golfer, Clarington has five golf clubs and two driving ranges. Boat launches are available at the Bowmanville Harbour and the Port of Newcastle Marina.

The Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board provides 18 Elementary, 2 Intermediate and 4 Secondary schools for those seeking Public education in Clarington. The Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington Catholic District School Board offers 7 Elementary schools and 2 Secondary schools.

Bussing is provided by both boards where distance to school is an issue.
