Scugog is a township in the  Regional Municipality of Durham . It is northeast of  Toronto  and just north of  Oshawa .

The Township of Scugog is a growing community surrounding Lake Scugog. The anchor and largest population base of the township is Port Perry.

Geographically it is one of the largest municipalities in Durham Region; however, it has one of the smallest populations in the region with approximately 21,000 residents. 

Lake Scugog is one of Southern Ontario’s largest bodies of water. The landmark Scugog Island, is populated by year-round residents, and cottagers, and is also the home of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island, a First Nations Reserve. 

“Scugog”, is a First Nations word meaning “marshy waters”. A wide shoreline, and marshy waters, made Scugog an ideal place for growing crops. Lake Scugog still has one of the largest natural wild rice beds in Ontario.

Located 75 km from Toronto, businesses in Scugog have convenient access to the largest consumer market in Canada and fourth largest region in North America. The  key industries  include agriculture, tourism and light manufacturing.

Port Perry

Port Perry is a community located in  Scugog  Ontario, Canada. The town is located 84 kilometres (52 mi) northeast of central  Toronto  and north of  Oshawa and Whitby.  Due to its location in the  Greater Toronto Area  many residents commute to Toronto for work.

Port Perry serves as the administrative and commercial centre for the township of Scugog. The town is home to a 24-bed hospital ( Lakeridge Health Port Perry ), Scugog Township's municipal offices and many retail establishments. Port Perry serves as a hub for many small communities in the Scugog area. The Great Blue Heron Charitable Casino is a major employer.

The quaint town of Port Perry has one of the prettiest main streets in the GTA. You’ll find the Victorian heritage district, distinctive old buildings filled with character and charm, unique shops, theatre and farm-to-table restaurants. The main street leads right down to Lake Scugog where boats launch and the waterfront park.

Port Perry's Victorian-era downtown is a tourist destination, with clothing stores, restaurants, cafés, bookstores, galleries and antique shops. In the summer, the town features the festivals  Mississauga First Nation  Pow Wow, the Highland Games, the Dragon Boat Races and StreetFest. There are also golf courses, both public and private

The Lake Scugog shoreline offers two popular lakeside parks, Palmer and Birdseye. There are active fishing seasons, both winter and summer. In the winter months, Lake Scugog is dotted with ice-fishing huts and is a destination for ice fishermen and snowmobilers.
